6.4 Alarm information delivery
A clear alarm delivery procedure and protocol should be defined to ensure that the alarm information will be properly received by the end user. This should occur at least at the beginning of the alarm and at the end when requested.
It is recommended to evaluate various communication methods to send the alarms in order to increase the reliability. In any case, a back-up method is recommended.
It is necessary to monitor faults of the TWS and communication links and notify the end users of possible detected faults that may affect the availability and the reliability of the alarm. NOTE There are users that prefer to use an automatic alarm procedure (e.g. warning lights of different colours green/orange/red, sirens) without human action, when other users prefer to base the alarm procedure on a human local decision after analysis of the warning data.

8 Maintenance
For an LLS or a network of detectors based on single detectors, the maintenance is the responsibility of the network operator. For a single thunderstorm detector, the maintenance period of the TWS should be provided in the manufacturer’s instructions and may depend on location and environment. Tests in Annex E provide information on how the sensor will resist environmental conditions (UV, marine and industrial pollution, dust, etc). Maintenance of the systems integrated in a TWS, including alarm delivery, is indispensable. The precision of the information provided by a TWS is directly determined by the physical conditions of its sensors, their environment (i.e. growing vegetation, buildings, towers, etc.), communication links between the sensors and the control unit as well as between the TWS and end users.
NOTE Maintenance tasks can include for example: cleaning, re-adjustment of parameters, periodic calibration, verification of good operation, communication ability. Real-time self-checking methods should be provided to ensure the TWS is still working properly. The provider of the TWS has to ensure that the full chain from lightning data acquisition to the delivery of an alarm to the user is working properly.
